Episode 20: A family linked to the force
Despite Tanjiro’s efforts, Rui is still alive as he himself cut off his head to avoid the decapitation of the hunter.
The demonic moon decides to end the life of both Kamado brothers, however Giyu’s appearance ended his plans, and his life. Meanwhile, the demon sister begins to remember her arrival in that forest and how she joined Rui’s family.
Finally he finds a hunter and encloses him in his ‘cocoon’, but he does not get very far because Shinobu arrives to judge his actions, in the end the demon dies poisoned by the insect pillar sword. For his part, Rui remembers that he wanted family ties because maybe he could remember something about his life as a human.
Show of strength
This week Kimetsu no Yaiba chapter twenty was less epic than its predecessor, but that does not mean it was less exciting and visually beautiful. Perhaps one of the reasons why he felt less epic is because of the monstrous strength of the pillars, let’s see, that a strong character makes his appearance for a battle is usually very exciting, unless it is so strong that his appearance just be ‘fanservice’.
I say this especially for Giyu, who without any effort ended with Rui, his technique was beautiful but ephemeral, if you blinked you missed the cusp moment, or at least it felt that way for me. I can understand that Rui survived the desperate and incredible almost suicidal technique of Tanjiro, however I cannot accept the ease with which Giyu arrives and gets rid of him in a matter of seconds, it detracts from the effort shown.
On the other hand, and obscuring the ephemeral participation of Giyu, we have Shinobu, who showed us that the force can be delicate and strategic. This pillar is a particular case; In the first place, he does not seem to seek the eradication of demons in such a sharp way, he believes in forming friendships between humans and demons, and now we can know that his way of fighting is very unique, since she does not cut off the head of her opponents, if not that it infects them with the poison put on the blade of their katana
Although perhaps the most disturbing feature of this pillar is its disguised sadism. What is clear to me is that Shinobu is as lethal as charming, even his attack was, the beauty of the butterfly was comparable to the fate of pain that awaited the demon in which he perched.
The family is not chosen
Continuing with the theme of past episodes about ties, I would like to retake this of the forced family a little, because which family is not in fact forced? Let’s be fair with this, no biologic family is by choice, it is something that nature imposes on you and it depends on each individual whether it forms emotional bonds or not.
And the latter is the key to understanding the problem with Rui’s family. It is true that the family is not chosen, but it is also true that nothing forces you to feel affection for her, which Rui breaks by imposing her ideal of ‘true ties’.
But well, in the end it is revealed that Rui has no memories of his life as a human and that is why he wants so much to form these ‘true bonds’. Since in his mind he has formed the idea that if he rubs on these feelings some memory will awaken in him.
Obviously his motivation was corrupted in half and I just got a sect that would obey him as long as he was not injured. And yes, what Rui did was to form a sect not a family, he even chose the perfect whites to join: weak of mind and body that in their despair would do what they were asked in order to survive.
In sum, Rui did for himself what nature does for the rest, with the only difference in that he forgot to leave free will intact. He was responsible for submitting them and imposing their beliefs, which completely forgot the essentials within a family: affective bonds.
Rui became obsessed with the representative roles of each figure at the family level, but in his obsession he forgot to understand what these roles mean.
Kimetsu no Yaiba chapter twenty has been a fleeting episode, but conscientiously revealing. I can’t help thinking that Giyu’s fight was terribly powerless, aesthetically it was beautiful but it fails on many levels like a battle of Shounen.
In my poor opinion, Shinobu has much more merit in this episode, without defeating a demonic moon, than Giyu can have. This chapter felt somewhat lazy in parts, but I suppose that is due in large part to how incredible the previous chapter was, all the adrenaline that aroused in me the nineteenth episode still does not completely leave my system.
Anyway, before finishing I must do a final work of praise for the aesthetics of the techniques of both pillars. While it is true that I am not happy with Giyu’s fleeting technique, I cannot and must not deny the beauty of his futility.
The appearance of this eleventh technique is the verification that you never learn everything, you can always innovate, reinvent or improve. Then there is the Shinobu technique, a delicate sample of ‘lethal femininity’, visually it is a sweet composition, a butterfly perches on its target, and the next thing there is is an overflow of blood, beautifully lethal.
